Siding
What we do
Siding is your house's raincoat, but it is not the whole raincoat. Behind it sit a weather barrier and flashing that deal with the water siding lets through. Carleton Prime installs new and replacement siding on homes, additions and garages across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley.
- Re-siding a whole house
- Siding on new additions, garages and coach houses
- Replacing damaged sections
- Exterior trim around windows, doors and corners
- Flashing where walls meet roofs, decks and windows

“Indiana and his crew renovated a bathroom for me and the process was seamless, respectful and completed with extreme care and quality. I consider Carleton Prime the best construction company in Ottawa. I will use them for all future projects. Very pleased, would highly recommend.”
What is behind the siding matters most
Every kind of siding lets some water get behind it, especially in wind-driven rain. What stops that water from reaching the wall is the weather barrier underneath, lapped so water runs down and out, plus flashing over windows and doors and wherever a roof meets a wall.
When the old siding comes off, we look at the sheathing and framing underneath and tell you about any rot or damage before the new siding goes on. That is the one time those parts of the house are easy to reach.

Built for freeze and thaw
Siding grows in summer heat and shrinks in the cold. It has to be fastened so it can move, the way its maker specifies, or it buckles and cracks. Bottom edges need to stay clear of the ground, and of the roof where a wall meets it, so snow and splashing water do not soak them.
Permits and local rules
The City of Ottawa's lists of work that does and does not need a permit do not mention siding on its own, so we confirm it with the City for your project. Siding that is part of an addition, or a wall that is being rebuilt, falls under work that needs a permit. We apply for any permit your project needs.
In Perth's downtown heritage district, changes to street-facing walls generally need a heritage permit. Our Perth page has the details.
On an older house, the old siding itself can contain asbestos. Health Canada lists house siding among the materials where it can turn up, and advises having a professional test before renovating.

Siding, windows and roof together
Siding, windows and roofing all meet at the same edges, and most leaks happen where they meet. Because Carleton Prime does windows and doors and roofing too, one company is responsible for every one of those joints.
Whole job or one part
Just the siding, or the whole project
You can hire Carleton Prime for siding on its own, or as part of a renovation or new build we run from start to finish. Builders, general contractors, architects, designers and engineers also bring us in for siding as a subcontractor: we work from your drawings and specifications, carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and hand over cleanly to the next trade.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for new siding?
It depends on the job, and Ottawa's permit lists do not cover siding on its own, so we confirm it with the City for your project. Siding on an addition, or on a wall that is being rebuilt, is part of work that needs a permit. We apply for any permits for you.
How much does new siding cost?
We quote each job on its scope: the size of the walls, the type of siding, how much trim and flashing is involved, and what we find under the old siding.
Can new siding go over the old siding?
In some cases it can, but taking the old siding off lets us see and fix the wall underneath and keeps the trim around windows and doors lining up. We talk through both options with you.
Can you repair just one damaged section?
Often, yes, if matching siding is still available. Older siding can be hard to match in colour, so we tell you what to expect before we start.
Do you side additions and garages?
Yes. We side the additions, garages and coach houses we build, and we take on siding by itself for homeowners and builders.
What warranty comes with siding?
Siding installation is construction work, so it carries our five-year warranty.
