Kitchen remodels

We start with how you use the room

The kitchen is the one room that has to keep working every day, including the weeks it is being rebuilt. Carleton Prime remodels kitchens across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley, from new cabinets and counters in the same footprint to taking down a wall and starting the layout over.

Before anyone picks a cabinet colour, we want to know how your kitchen actually gets used. Who cooks, and how often. Where the grocery bags land when you come in the door. Whether homework happens at the island. Good layouts come out of those answers. Not out of a catalogue.

A beautiful kitchen with the fridge in the wrong spot is still a kitchen that annoys you every morning. It is much cheaper to get that right on paper than to move plumbing after the counters are in.

The work behind the cabinets

Most of what decides whether a kitchen lasts happens before the cabinets go on the wall:

  • Electrical. Kitchens now run far more appliances than older Ottawa houses were wired for. New circuits for an induction range, wall oven or microwave are done by a licensed electrical contractor under an Electrical Safety Authority permit.
  • Venting. A range hood should take steam and grease outside, not blow it around the room.
  • Plumbing. Moving the sink, adding an island sink or a dishwasher means moving drains and supply lines, and that is decided early.
  • Floors and walls. Older homes often have floors that are not level and walls that are not square. We find out before the countertops are measured, so they fit the first time.

Living at home while we work

Most families stay in the house through a kitchen remodel, so we plan that with you from the start: where a temporary kitchen can go, how the work area gets closed off from the rest of the house, and when the water or power will be off. You hear about it before it happens, not after.

And the work area is left clean every evening. A clean, respectful job site is one of our values, not an extra.

One company, start to finish

Carleton Prime is a one-stop shop. Drywall, flooring and painting are services we offer ourselves, so the company that plans your kitchen is also the one that finishes it. Fewer handoffs means fewer gaps for details to fall through. The construction carries a five-year warranty, and the painting a two-year one.

If you would like to see how a project runs from the first visit to the last, our five steps are laid out on the company information page.

Whole job or one part

The whole project, or any part of it

Carleton Prime can take on the whole project, turnkey, or just the part you need: one phase, or one trade such as the framing, drywall, tile, flooring or painting. Builders, general contractors, architects, designers and engineers can also bring us in as a subcontractor and an extra, experienced member of the team.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Ottawa?

It depends on the size of the room, whether the layout changes, and the cabinets, counters and appliances you choose. After the free in-home consultation you get a detailed estimate with a clear scope, so you can see where the money goes before you decide.

Is a permit needed for a kitchen remodel?

New cabinets and counters in the same layout usually do not need a building permit. Moving walls, changing plumbing or adding electrical circuits often do, and electrical work goes through the Electrical Safety Authority. We confirm what your project needs and apply for the permits on your behalf.

Do you also do the flooring and painting?

Yes. Flooring, including hardwood, drywall and painting are all services Carleton Prime offers, so the whole kitchen can be finished by one company.
