Home renovations, inside and out

Opening up a floor plan

Some projects do not fit in one room. Opening up the main floor, renovating a whole level at once, giving a tired exterior a new face. Those are the jobs where one company coordinating every trade makes the biggest difference.

Taking out a wall is rarely just taking out a wall. If it is load-bearing, it needs three things. A beam sized by an engineer, a building permit, and temporary support while the work happens. Walls also hide things. Ducts, plumbing stacks and wiring all have to go somewhere else when the wall comes out, and finding them before the plan is final is what keeps the budget intact. We open up the question before we open up the wall, so the plan survives contact with the house.

“Indiana and his crew renovated a bathroom for me and the process was seamless, respectful and completed with extreme care and quality. I consider Carleton Prime the best construction company in Ottawa. I will use them for all future projects. Very pleased, would highly recommend.”

A whole floor at once

Renovating a level in one go means the work can happen in the right order: demolition, then plumbing and electrical, insulation, drywall, flooring, trim and paint. Done piecemeal over years, each new job tends to damage the last one. Done together, it gets finished once.

Exterior renovations

Carleton Prime does exterior renovation and building work of every kind, and the landscaping that goes with it: hardscaping, interlock, decks and fences.

Whatever the job, Ottawa weather decides whether it lasts. Freeze and thaw, driven rain and snow piled against the walls all test the details, and a lot of exterior problems start where water gets behind the cladding around windows and doors. We treat flashing and air sealing as part of the job, not extras. You will never see them, which is the point.

Whole job or one part

The whole project, or any part of it

Carleton Prime can take on the whole project, turnkey, or just the part you need: one phase, or one trade such as the framing, drywall, tile, flooring or painting. Builders, general contractors, architects, designers and engineers can also bring us in as a subcontractor and an extra, experienced member of the team.

Frequently asked questions

Is a permit needed to remove a wall?

If the wall is load-bearing, yes, and the beam that replaces it has to be designed. Removing a non-structural wall may not need one, but moving plumbing or wiring inside it can. We confirm what your project needs and apply for the permits on your behalf.

Can we live at home during a whole-floor renovation?

It depends on how much of the house is involved, and whether the kitchen or the only bathroom is part of it. We talk it through at the consultation so you can plan.

Do you build decks, fences and interlock?

Yes. Hardscaping, interlock, decks and fences are all part of the exterior work Carleton Prime does, on their own or alongside a renovation.
