Drywall

The right board in the right place

Good drywall is invisible. Nobody notices a flat wall with crisp corners, but everyone notices the seam that shows through the paint when the afternoon sun hits it. Carleton Prime hangs, tapes, finishes and repairs drywall, and because we paint too, the wall is finished by the same company that paints it.

  • Moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and laundry rooms
  • Fire-rated board where the Ontario Building Code calls for a fire separation, such as between the two homes in a secondary dwelling unit
  • Standard board everywhere else, hung so the joints fall where they are easiest to hide

“Indiana and his crew renovated a bathroom for me and the process was seamless, respectful and completed with extreme care and quality. I consider Carleton Prime the best construction company in Ottawa. I will use them for all future projects. Very pleased, would highly recommend.”

Repairs

Holes, cracks at the corners of doors and windows, nail pops, and ceilings stained by an old leak. With water damage, the leak gets fixed first and the drywall second; patching over a wet ceiling just means patching it again.

Older homes often have plaster instead of drywall. Sometimes it can be repaired. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace, and we will tell you which.

Older homes: test before you sand

Asbestos was used in many building materials before it was restricted. Health Canada lists drywall, plaster, paint, spackling and ceiling tiles among the places it can turn up in older homes, and advises having a professional test before renovating. Left alone it is low risk. Sanding and demolition are what put fibres in the air, so testing comes first.

Whole job or one part

Just the drywall, or the whole project

You can hire Carleton Prime for drywall on its own, or as part of a renovation or new build we run from start to finish. Builders, general contractors, architects, designers and engineers also bring us in for drywall as a subcontractor: we work from your drawings and specifications, carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and hand over cleanly to the next trade.

Frequently asked questions

How long before new drywall can be painted?

Each coat of joint compound has to dry before the next one goes on, so taping and finishing takes several days even on a small job. After that it is primed, then painted.

Is there asbestos in my walls?

You cannot tell by looking. In an older home, Health Canada advises having a professional test for asbestos before renovating, and that should happen before any sanding or demolition.

Can you fix a crack that keeps coming back?

Usually, yes. A crack that returns is often movement in the framing, so the repair has to allow for that rather than just filling the crack again.
